MKV lossless conversion?

I was just willing to convert a collection of HD Videos (in MKV format) to any format which is supported on DVD Players to play on HDTV.
Of course there should be considered some loss but it's fine if not much quality decreased..

Or if it is possible for any DVD player to play directly the MKV format?

Re: MKV lossless conversion?

I think it depends on the feature set of the DVD player. I think all DVD players nowadays can play HD content.

Re: MKV lossless conversion?

^Yes but the problem is due to specific format MKV. I am not sure if the DVD players support this format... At least which I tried, they didn't read the file.
Do you know any player which can play upscaled MKV?

Re: MKV lossless conversion?

Standard DVD players can not play HD content. In order for you to play HD content on a SD-DVD player you will have to scale it down to 720x480 resolution through conversion. In that case the content then becomes SD. MKV is a container format and is not a codec. Only a DVD player that supports MKV will be able to play a content stored in an MKV file. Most commonly available DVD players do not support MKV format. Also you need to take into account whether the codec used to encode the content in MKV file is compatible with the DVD player.

Some DVD players can play dvix/xvid encoded files stored in a AVI container. But mostly SD-DVD players can only play mpeg-2 encoded files stored in a VOB container.

In order to play HD content you need a Blueray player.

^In that case one can simply connect their computer to the HD TV through HDMI.

@Raza0007. I actually didn't want to buy a blue-ray player for that. so just wanted the content be converted as better as it could.
and the Computer to HDTV of course is the last option.

Re: MKV lossless conversion?

Well I was reading this thread for quite a while. What I understand is that you want to convert mkv files to DVD format that you can play on dvd player. Well there are softwares available that can convert that for you. Try "ConvertX to DVD" software for this purpose. Will wait for reply that I understood your question rightly or not and that you got any help with this software that I mentioned or not.

Then the best option for you is to down convert your HD content to a format that your DVD player can understand, which is usually mpeg-2 in a vob container. You can use various free or paid video converter softwares for that purpose. The heading of the discussion, "MKV lossless conversion", is not possible. When you down convert from a HD to a SD dvd, you will definitely lose some quality.

But so does your computer. In fact, with a computer you can add as much external storage as possible.
