This is brilliant news – WiMAX networks are cheap enough that internet prices should finally tumble – I expect the upcoming WiMAX networks will undercut all the existing players. Wateen’s recent advertisement “Bridging the Digital Divide” indicates that the pricing will be reasonabe. Not only that, it will provide internet access to entire cities in one go, instead of the current bits and pieces.
For a good overview of the upcoming Wimax networks, see the “the first issue of MuniWireless Magazine”:http://www.muniwireless.com/assets/docs/mwm_premier.pdf, a free 6.8 meg pdf download. It includes a complete overview of “WiMAX”:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wimax networks, of which it seems that at least 3 are being put up in the near future in Pakistan.
They are listed below in the order of their expected launch.
h3. Dancom Online Services
“Dancom Online Services”:http://dancom.net.pk/, a subsidiary of “Dancom Malaysia”:http://www.dancom.com.my/ is planning the “deployment of a WiMAX-based broadband wireless network”:http://www.redlinecommunications.com/news/pressreleases/2006/061906.html all over Pakistan. In the first phase, the company hopes to cover major cities like Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Faisalabad and Multan, and in the next phase it will cover Quetta, Peshawar, Gujranwala, Sialkot and others.
Expected deployment is sometime end July, 2006.
h3. Wateen Telecom
The major player is “Wateen Telecom”:http://www.wateen.com/, which signed a $60-million contract with Motorola on May 23 2006 for the deployment of Wi-max across the country. Motorola is providing Wateen Telecom with an 802.16e-based “Motowi4″:http://www.motorola.com/content.jsp?globalObjectId=5918-8767 network. An initial uptake of a million subscribers is expected, with a nationwide rollout to follow. Motorola will look after the operations and maintenance of the wi4WiMAX/IMS network.
The launch date is not confirmed yet, but Tariq Qureshim, general manager of Wateen Telecom, was reported saying that 193 base stations would be deployed by the end of 2006 and 600 by June 2007.
Wateen’s website “indicates”:http://www.wateen.com/register.aspx that lauch speeds (128-256kbps) aren’t going to be anything to write home about, and WiMax prices will be targeting the corporate market.
For consumers, the access will be though “hotzone boxes”:http://motorola.canopywireless.com/fp/downlink.php?id=177f59c1015bb58ad67db78bc220d975 offering local 802.11 b/g, (WiFi) access. The hotzone boxes will be connected through the backhaul WiMax mesh network. Business etc. will have direct WiMax connections.
h3. the rest
There are a number of other players hopping onto the WiMAX bandwagon, but most are targeting the corporate market. For example, Supernet has already deployed Aperto Networks PacketWave broadband wireless systems in Karachi, and is in the process of deploying systems in Lahore and Islamabad as well.
“ZTE”:http://www.zte.com.cn/English/index.jsp deployed a trial WiMAX network in Islamabad last year, but there hasn’t been much news from them.
h3. What if They Built an Urban Wireless Network and Hardly Anyone Used It?
The “New York Times”:http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/26/technology/26taipei.html?pagewanted=print reports that only 40,000 people use Taiwan’s wireless network.
Despite WiFly’s ubiquity — with 4,100 hot spot access points reaching 90 percent of the population — just 40,000 of Taipei’s 2.6 million residents have agreed to pay for the service since January. Q-Ware, the local Internet provider that built and runs the network, once expected to have 250,000 subscribers by the end of the year, but it has lowered that target to 200,000.
That such a vast and reasonably priced wireless network has attracted so few users in an otherwise tech-hungry metropolis should give pause to civic leaders in Chicago, Philadelphia and dozens of other American cities that are building wireless networks of their own.
p. The scenario is very different in Pakistan. Taipei is extremely high tech – everyone is already connected to the internet, so a wireless connection isn’t very alluring, besdies the mobility factor. Even that is negated by that fact that many public spaces already have free wireless connections, so not many are willing to pay for wireless internet.
Here in Pakistan, things are very different. The wired telephone network is in shambles, reflected by the sad fact that as of June 2006 the numerous DSL companies in Pakistan only managed to sell 2600 connections combined. There are also a number of companies in the internet space, who are operating on the classic “robber baron”:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robber_baron_(industrialist) pattern. The market is ripe for something which bypasses the current players, and thus there is a bright future for the new Wimax networks being set up. There aren’t many laptop toting people in Pakistan needing wireless access on the bus, but plenty of people will opt for a wireless connection at home if the price is right.
Anyways, a WiMax network is complementary, not a replacement to wired networks.
All Internet technologies are not created equal, it seems, and the wireless varieties — specifically 3G and WiMax — are at a real disadvantage when it comes to bang for the bit.

well thats really nice to know WiMax gonna rock in pakistan as do wateen
It’s good to hear of WiMax coming here but the real issue is if it is affordable to the public or not. If it is tarrifed the same as the current DSL, then this is just a sham. Furthermore, the lack of competition makes me very vary of any exploitation of the Pakistani market by Wateen just like Orascom did using Mobilink when it was one of the only celluler service operators in Pakistan all those years back.
I hope the wifi hotzone system doesn’t interfere with present 802.11 home networks…
Wahtever i am waiting for it
the 18mbps connection i got gives me 180ms latency coz it’s sattelite so come on guys move ur asses faster and give us Wimax
Sounds exciting, but like every other exciting news .. this one too is gonna be what most of us fear it to be … Warid is gonna empty our pockets if there is no good competition. Also everybody is talking about corporate stuff ..so the home user will sure have difficulties getting affordable, fast, reliable, wireless internet in Pakistan for the next few years, .. sadly
salam
i wnt to know more about wimax technology.please forward me more information.
thanks
I had one of the trial deployments at my office. The equipment is still there but they’re probably upgrading back-end stuff (APs, etc.)
It’s great when working but since it’s a trial, they do shut it down or try different settings at times blocking certain sites.
Drop into my office if you wanna try. I’ve terminated it to my WiFi router so bring your notebook with wireless connectivity option. Will update as soon as Wateen resumes trial service.
Its great but this is creating problem in satellite reception of C Band.As Wimax in Pakistan is in frequency range of 3.5GHZ which is used by all Pakistani Channels e.g Geo,ARY,AAJ,Dawn etc.So it creat problem in these channels reception. It will be big issue in coming weeks as it causes problem in recepiton of TV channels.
#7: I also had a trial deployment (Wateen) for a few months, it worked well when it did, but has been down for some time now. The equipment is still installed, but off now.
Hi i m a software eng and i need internet to study and do my work and i live in malir cantt. Oh wellcome wimax i m hearing a lot about wateen and its bringing wimax to karachi but where is wimax is it only for the corporate people but what happens to the other people who are just tired of this ptcl and its setup… and now its dsl what is the use of dsl i dnt know when it runs on the same dead phone line. Well where is Wateen and its Wimax …..when is it launching we are in need …come on work fast….
DSL and WiMax broadband services are not available in the remote areas of Capital City, Islamabad. In urban areas other broadband service providers are operating but in remote areas i.e. suburbs of Islamabad, like Chack Shahzad and TARNOOL….. no broadband connectivity.
Please provide WiMax services in TARNOOL, Islamabad.
